Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best benchtop for kitchens?

Essentially the best material for a benchtop is depending on where the benchtop is positioned as well as other factors. If you are using the benchtop for an outdoor kitchen, Granite, marble, and porcelain are best recommended. Granite and marble are a natural non-porous stone, which naturally resist the elements such as grease, food spills, high temperatures from the grill and exposure to environmental elements such as rain and sun. Porcelain is ideal for wet areas as it is compact and non-porous, with an absorption rate of <.5%, perfect for demanding, high-use and wet surfaces, giving you the option to use for an area that is not under cover.

Generally, for indoor use we recommend quartz Stone or a laminated benchtop. Quartz is essentially an engineered stone and certainly an ideal surface for an almost-endless array of interior applications with a large range of colour options. Some of our leading brands include Caesarstone, Quantum Quartz and Essa Stone. Quartz stone is certainly hardwearing, durable, and an aesthetically pleasing benchtop with minimal maintenance required. Alternatively, if you are on a budget, then you can opt for the laminate benchtop.

How Q-stone and Natural stone differ?

Q-stone is an engineered stone and is a highly durable, hard-wearing surface, composed of 94% natural quartz and 6% advanced resin. Q-stone provides an array of designed quartz surfaces with superior quality and the best surface finishes.

Natural stone refers to materials extracted from the earth, which is in use for many years as building materials and decorative adornments. These products include marble, granite, sandstone, slate, limestone and others. When it comes to durability and maintenance, natural stone will always remain ahead of its competition hands-down. Flashback check - the ancient civilisations preferred natural stone for building iconic monuments that exist to this day, even after centuries. Many natural stones are less porous, which enhances their durability.

Can I directly cut vegetables on the kitchen benchtop?

Essentially hard-stone bench-tops like granite and quartz engineered stone can endure knife work in the kitchen, however certainly not recommended. Bear in mind, granite or quartz kitchen benchtop is an investment, and you need to protect it. Thus, it’s better to use a cutting board (aka a chopping board) to cut vegetables & fruits on the benchtop. Another thing to consider is that, if you cut acidic foods like citrus fruits, then the acid can decline your benchtop surface, leaving an evident dull blot.

Are all types of natural stone appropriate for benchtop applications?

All types of natural stone will suit all kitchen benchtop applications. However, some natural stone works better in the kitchen. How you intend to use your kitchen is a vital factor in deciding the type of stone you need to choose.

What are the thicknesses in which benchtop slabs are available?

Laminated and Stone benchtops are available in various thicknesses. When it comes to Quartz stone the standard benchtop slab is available in a 20 mm thickness, however, can also come in a 40mm, 60mm or 80mm thickness. Essentially the stone slab will be 20mm with a 40mm lip. Granite and porcelain benchtops are only available in a 20mm thickness.
